A large-scale installation by the Rumanian Daniel Spoerri, in which the artist breathes life into the mythical Unicorn, provides the focal point of an itinerary that explores the tradition of museum as a "chamber of marvels". The installation uses contemporary language to comment on epistemological and methodological approaches employed in historical and scientific disciplines. Spoerri's work is complemented by a precious exhibit from the seventeenth century collection of the Marquis Ferdinando Cospi - a walrus tooth - and a rare edition from the Museum Wormianum of Olao Worm, with an erudite description of the Unicorn by the Danish scholar.

Guided tours will take place at the following times: Friday 19 September at 18.00 and 21.00; Saturday
20 September at 11.00, 18.00 and 21.00; Sunday 21 September at 11.00 and 18.00.

Daniel Spoerri
An eclectic figure on the contemporary art scene, Daniel Spoerri (Galati-Romania, 1930) came to the visual arts via dance, mime and theatre. He is famous for his "tableaux pièges" (trap pictures), vertical panels which "capture" groups of objects assembled on a horizontal plane (a table, a drawer, a box). His Topographie Anecdotée du Hasard belongs to this phase, described by one critic as the most important artist's book of the post-war period.
After living in New York, Simi, Düsseldorf and in the outskirts of Paris, the artist went to live in the small medieval village of Seggiano sull'Amiata.  Here he began working on a project for a park and a foundation, Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri. On the top of the hill he positioned the work L'ombelico del mondo (The navel of the world), one of his most semantically complex works: a fenced area 8 metres in diameter filled with monumental bronze sculptures in which the artist evokes the Unicorn legend. A later version of this work from a private collection will be on display in the exhibition, which has been curated by Modena's Musei Civici to coincide with the festivalfilosofia 2008.

Vernissage: Friday 19 at 12.30 featuring the artist
