The multifarious output of the artist Giovan Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), and above all  his engravings, follows a common theme: the interpretation and transposition of architecture, either ancient or invented, through flights of fancy that become more and more striking in their originality.

Piranesi was infatuated by the grandiloquence in the architecture of Ancient Rome, whose powerful ruins, charged with mysterious energy, exerted an overwhelming impact on him.  In his views of Rome, he represented the imaginative and formal distance that separates him from contemporary Venetian artists who were trained in the refined culture of his city.
But Piranesi's central works are his Carceri d'invenzione (Invented prisons). Also central for the artist, who published two editions 15 years apart, they present architecture in which the fantastical quality of their perspective and the inventive quality of their geometrical volumes combine in evoking the most disquieting aspects of prison life.
The exhibition includes the second edition of the Carceri (Prisons) and a selection of 14 views of ruins, those in which the artist - as has been commented - represents the architecture and figures that merge there in an almost proto-cubist sense, moving towards a metaphysical image of planes and architectonic masses.

The exhibition continues until 23 November 2008 at the following times:
Tuesday to Thursday: 10.00 - 13.00 (on request)
Friday, Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays: 10.00 - 13.00 and 15.00 - 19.00
